Questions for Application

1. At several points during the Passion we see Jesus invoking the Psalms. Do you think it significant that Jesus relied on this book during the darkest moments of his life? Why? How might the Psalms be said to sustain the troubled soul?

2. When Jesus addressed his disciples in Gethsemane, he urged them to “watch” (Mk 14:34). In view of Benedict’s commentary on this (pp. 152-53), what in today’s world induces a drowsiness of the soul?

3. Have you ever prayed “not my will but thine” in difficult circumstances? Did you find that your surrender to God’s will was worth the effort to renounce your own desires? Did you sense that God supplied the strength to follow through on your resolution? What good resulted from it?

4. Benedict offers the reflection that “my own sin was present in that terrifying chalice” offered to Jesus in Gethsemane (p. 156). Have you ever pictured Jesus agonizing at the prospect of shouldering the burden for your personal sins? Beyond stirring up pious sentiments, does it increase your desire to repent and to change the way you live?

5. Jesus addressed the Father using the Aramaic term “Abba”. It bespeaks a relationship of tender familiarity such as children often have with their human fathers. How is your view of prayer and of your relationship with God affected by this background information? Do you think it encourages us to pray to our heavenly Father with confidence? Humility? Affection?
